How to calculate volumetric weight
Parcelpal’s guide to calculating volumetric weight
What is volumetric weight?
Volumetric weight also known as dimensional weight, is what is used as an estimated weight for parcels.
This is calculated from the length, width and height of a parcel. This calculation reflects the density of the parcel.
So, the volumetric weight of the parcel is a calculation that reflects the density of the parcel. Essentially, how dense the parcel is.
Why is it important to calculate?
The reason behind calculating volumetric weight is because the amount of space that the parcel occupies in a van, aircraft, or ship can be larger than the actual weight. So, a parcel can be low in density but occupying more space. This is where the price is calculated from. If the parcel is high in density but small in size, the price will be calculated on that factor. This system makes the pricing calculation more accurate and fairer for our customers.
